Baixo Guadiana region is in Algarve and its territory comprises the municipalities of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António having as a privileged link with Guadiana river. It is a region with great diversity of landscapes where sun, sea, mountains and river coexists.

ODIANA – Associação para o Desenvolvimento do Baixo Guadiana (Association for the Development of Baixo Guadiana Region) was founded in 1998 by the Municipalities of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António and received an old name of Guadiana river: Odiana. It is a non-profit organization whose goal is to leverage the territory through infrastructure projects contributing to economic, social and cultural development of Baixo Guadiana region. Among its projects are the Pedestrian Routes Network and the Great Guadiana Route (GR15).

Pedestrian Routes Network

Baixo Guadiana Region offers a network of 135 kilometers of walking trails, divided into 19 separate routes, which allows the visitor to discover all the treasures this region has to offer. Odiana association was responsible for the implementation of these pathways that are signed and approved by the Federation of Camping and Mountaineering in Portugal. In May 2013 Odiana has began a process of maintenance of these pedestrian routes.

Great Route of Guadiana(GR15)

The Great Guadiana Route (GR15) is about 65 km's long and covers the territory of Baixo Guadiana in Algarve. The route crosses three municipalities (Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António) and travels for 16 locations that represent the typical characteristics of the «serra», the barrocal and the coast, with the ex líbris of the territory: Guadiana, the great river of the south. It was concluded in 2014.

Interesting places and infrastructures - Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António Nature Reserve, streams, Guadiana river, river beach, dams, mountains and barrocal from the rural Algarve (fauna, flora, gastronomy, typical architecture), Spanish village of Sanlucar del Guadiana, tracks of the almond blossom. Picnic Parks, belvederes, Marquês de Pombal Square, Adventure Park in Odeleite, Alcoutim and Castro Marim Castles, S. Sebastião Fort, Ravelin of Santo Antonio, several churches and hermitages, small museums, water mills.
