Base Characterization
-
Between Trafaria and Albufeira lagoon there is a cliff 1 km away from the current shoreline, exposing sediments deposited during the last 20 million years. The cliff establishes the boundary between the current coastal plain and an ancient littoral platform, currently more than 80 m above sea level. The cliff is called fossil for having been, in the past, in direct contact with the sea.
It is unique in Portugal due to its length, good exposure and degree of conservation, reasons that were the basis for the creation of the protected area.
