Presentation

  • This Regional Natural Park (with about 25.000 ha) is characterized by the presence of mountains and imposing quartzite crests, plateau areas with a little relief and fitted valleys with steep sides mainly on the final sections of the Tua and the Tinhela rivers. The Tua valley has some of the most interesting vegetable formations of the Terra Quente: boxwood masses, maple wood and cork oak woods with Portuguese oak. Diverse flora - 700 species of vascular flora - with highlight for the endemics Digitalis purpurea subsp. amandiana - and 400 cryptogamic flora (bryophyta and lichen).

In terms of fauna 943 species were registered up to this day, of which 744 are land invertebrates, 15 fish species, 20 reptiles, 123 birds and 29 mammal species of which 14 are bats. The construction of the Foz-Tua dam (predicted to end in 2016) will create changes - namely due to the presence of its reservoir - in the natural and landscape characteristics of the Tua valley and its surrounding areas.

  • Climb up to one of several belvederes and enjoy the Tua and Tinhela rivers and the landscape, always the landscape... Eat an "alheira" or any other typical dish of this area which is welcoming to visitors and enjoy a Port wine.

To observe the fauna leave early in the morning or a bit before dusk. Bring binoculars and a camera, if you have them. Always pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid performing activities in days of rain, thunderstorm or fog. Avoid going out by yourself, but, if you do, inform an acquaintance or a local entity of your departure and return. Use simple and comfortable clothes. Make outerwear, food, water, sunscreen and/or a raincoat available. You may also want to take a cellphone and flashlight (do not start a fire and don't dispose of cigarette butts incorrectly). Take special precautions when walking in moist and rocky areas, to avoid falling and do not act in a way that might endanger yourself or others.

In case of an accident contact the emergency service 112.
