Presentation

  • In 2010, the Faia Brava Reserve was classified as the first Private Protected Area of the country also being a pilot area for the European project Rewilding Europe for the creation of wild natural areas and development of nature tourism.Located between Serra da Marofa mountain range and the vineyard covered Douro, in the heart of the river cannon of the Côa river, the Faia Brava Reserve, with 850 ha, promotes actions in the domains of ecological restoration through improvement of habitats, increasing the availability of food for the most endangered species and forest management. The deep granitic cliffs which characterize the territory where it is located are the origin of the name of the reserve - "faia" means cliff - which are quiet and safe nesting places for large birds that inhabit rocky environments. The Griffon Vulture, the Egyptian Vulture, the Bonneli's Eagle and the Golden Eagle are included in the nesting species that make the Faia Brava a place of high interest for the preservation of Nature.

  • Escape the routine, visiting a vigorous scenery and enjoying ways of being and acting that bring us closer to what is "natural". To observe the fauna leave early in the morning or a bit before dusk. Bring binoculars and a camera, if you have them. Always pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid performing activities in days of rain, thunderstorm or fog. Avoid going out by yourself, but, if you do, inform an acquaintance or a local entity of your departure and return. Use simple and comfortable clothes. Make outerwear, food, water, sunscreen and/or a raincoat available. You may also want to take a cellphone and flashlight (do not start a fire and don't dispose of cigarette butts incorrectly). Take special precautions when walking in moist and rocky areas, to avoid falling and do not act in a way that might endanger yourself or others. Take note that, in some places, mines are present, therefore you should not leave the existing paths and trails.

In case of an accident contact the emergency service 112.
