Portas de Ródão is a geological formation near Vila Velha de Rodão, and results from the intersection of the hard quartzite reliefs of Talhadas Mountain with the course of Tejo river. Two cliff walls (h.170 meters) reminiscing of two "gates", one on the north of Vila Velha de Rodão county and other on Nisa County causing an impressive thinning of the course of Tejo river. The beginning of this thinning in the river caused by erosion, started 2.5 million years ago, and went through several stages expressed in the river terraces and platforms embedded by erosion and visible on the right margin downstream from the natural monument.
Portas de Rodão are the habitat of the biggest population of griffon vultures in Portugal and more than a hundred other species of bird fauna can be observed - Black Stork, Black Vulture , Bonelli's eagle... Presence of several mammals - Boar, Deer, Genet... and several fish - Barbel, Nase, Carp...
At the top of the "northern gate" is located the small castle of King Wamba from where you have a panoramic view of the Tejo valley.

Note the remarkable strangulation of the course of this great river: the biggest in Portugal which many judge by the width of Mar da Palha and others by the view that you can have of it in the Portas do Sol in Santarém running through Portas de Rodão through a throat that is 45 m high.
To observe the fauna leave early in the morning or a bit before dusk. Bring binoculars and a camera, if you have them. Always pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid performing activities in days of rain, thunderstorm or fog. Avoid going out by yourself, but, if you do, inform an acquaintance or a local entity of your departure and return. Use simple and comfortable clothes. Make outerwear, food, water, sunscreen and/or a raincoat available. You may also want to take a cellphone and flashlight (do not start a fire and don't dispose of cigarette butts incorrectly). Take special precautions when walking in moist and rocky areas, to avoid falling and do not act in a way that might endanger yourself or others. Take note that, in some places, mines are present, therefore you should not leave the existing paths and trails.
In case of an accident contact the emergency service 112.
