Village in a vast plain area in Alentejo, almost without trees, occupied by cereal production. These pseudo-steppe or cereal-steppe farming system are nationally and internationally recognized for its importance to several bird species, such as the Great Bustard (Otis tarda, endangered and the heaviest European land bird), Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni, breeding and vulnerable), the Common Crane (Grus grus, wintering and vulnerable), the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax, vulnerable), Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis, endangered) and the Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus, endangered) among others.
The name "atabueira" comes from “tabúa” (cattail), plants of the genus Typha, from wetlands. A cattail and a Great bustard appear in the parish shield.
