Papoa – birdwatching and geology
Share Image
In the northern part of Peniche there is a rocky peninsula formed by limestone and volcanic breccia called Papoa. With thunderstorm and strong West wind, this is an excellent place to see the seabirds passing by, since then they fly closer to land, being possible even to observe some rarities. However, do not get too close to the cliff and put always your safety first, since the waves can drag a person to the sea.
Among the species you can see are several seagulls (Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Common Gull...), the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the European Shag (P. aristotelis), the Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), the Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) and several Sandpipers.
Pay also attention to terrestrial birds.
Papoa is the only place on the Portuguese mainland showing an episode of volcanism on the coast, having both scientific and pedagogical interest.
