Cultural Landscape of Sintra

The Sintra mountain range has an undisputed historical and cultural importance. The complexity and combination of natural and built heritage makes it unique. On the northern slope, the harmonious setting of the town of Sintra, parks and farms with their palaces and manor houses, created "a unique combination of parks and gardens that influenced the development of landscapes in Europe" (UNESCO, 1996). The hills are luxuriant, where historical parks and farms contribute with authentic botanical gardens, with species from all over the world. Particularly noteworthy are the Parks of Pena and of Monserrate, Quinta da Regaleira, Capuchos Convent, Pedras irmãs (sister rocks), Anta de Adrenunes, Peninha, Lagoa Azul (blue lagoon) and Mula river reservoir.
