Penhas Douradas (1300 m)

The name Penhas Douradas (golden cliffs) comes from the aspect of the geological formation present there. It’s a place with many granitic blocks and forests of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), characteristic of mountain areas.

Here was installed the 1st Portuguese mountain resort, having today several houses, facilities and a beautiful view on Zêzere valley.

Following the scientific expedition carried out in 1880 by Lisbon Geographic Society, doctor Sousa Martins considered Penhas Douradas the healthiest place in Portugal thanks to its fresh and clean air.

The resort, with unique sanatorium architecture in Portugal, remains intact.

 

Note: José Tomás de Sousa Martins (Alhandra 7-3-1843 - Lisbon 17-8-1897), Portuguese physician famous for his fight against tuberculosis in the country and died because of it. He had a special fascination for birds.
