Santa Marta viewpoint
Share Image
This viewpoint is on the southern end of the escarpment of the Minde fault in Middle Jurassic limestones. Immediately to the south, these compact limestones are overlying sandstones from Cretaceous through the thrust of Arrife, this is the reason why the slope is so steep. The view is primarily to south, on Tagus Tertiary Basin, being quite visible the gap between this one and Estremadura Limestone Massif.
Cretaceous – last phase of Mesozoic Era, between 135 and 165 million years.
Fault –cracks in the Earth's crust where movement occurs on at least one side.
Jurassic - geological period in which the dinosaurs dominated and the development of vegetation was abundant. It lasted about 54 million years, roughly between 208 to 144 million years ago.
Limestone – sedimentary rock composed of calcium carbonate.
Sandstone – sedimentary rock formed by sand and aggregated by cement.
Thrust - formed by horizontal compressive stresses and so cause shortening of the crust. Because the hangingwall moves up relative to the footwall, most of these faults place older rocks over younger ones.
