Alto da Lagoínha windmills and geology

In Alto da Lagoinha are several windmills, some in ruins, but others recovered. At the end of Alto da Lagoinha, on the southern tip of the county, near a geodetic point, is Penedo dos Ovos windmill, privately owned. It is fully restored and operational, often milling wheat. Its construction dates back to the mid-twentieth century and has a recovered miller's house attached.
The millstones were obtained from the granitic and conglomeratic sandstone, with thick clayey intercalations and marl, existing in Penedo dos Ovos, where is still possible to see some abandoned millstones, as well as holes resulting from erosion.
In Cadaval county, and proof of the good agricultural soil, once has existed 133 traditional milling systems, among mills in masonry, wood or metal and watermills.

Access coming from:
- Cadaval (11 km) – by N115 to Vilar. There take Flores street, Carrasqueira street, Principal street and Bica street. Before the end of this last one on Montejunto street, on the right there’s a dirt road. There are several windmills on the right and a little bit further on the same road;
- Alenquer (± 19 km) – by N9 and N365 to Atalaia. There take N115 to Vila Verde dos Francos, turning right to Montejunto street. After 2,7 km on the left there’s a dirt road and the mills are nearby.
