Castro de Pragança
Share Image
Discovered in 1893, slightly above Pragança village, this fortified settlement (castro) has been studied by Portuguese and foreign archaeologists. It is thought this important settlement was inhabited from the Copper Age, beginning of the 3rd millennium BC, and continued to be occupied throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages. Note that also has Roman remains.
In the 90s, excavations laid bare a semicircular tower of the Copper Age, along the rocky cliff, consisting of an access corridor to the inside and attached a rectangular structure.
After undergoing intervention by the municipality of Cadaval, visits are now possible, offering a unique view of the entire western region.
The most valuable pieces (the Pragança Treasury) are now on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Lisbon.
