S. Mamede hills top (viewpoint)
Share Image
From the highest point of S. Mamede mountain (1025 m high, the most important relief south of Tagus river) and on a clear day you can see Marvão, Castelo de Vide, the mountains of Gardunha, Talhadas, Estrela, Apartadura Dam and much of the Spanish Extremadura.
Try to see the redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) hoping there and the Wood Lark (Lullula arborea), the name of the genus Lullula is inspired by the song of this bird.
Despite being a very troubled area, given the existence of antennas and parking, it presents some interesting vegetation, such as a high-altitude heath, so circulate only on the paths and avoid stepping on the plants. For your safety, and because it is a windy high zone, take special care when walking.
The surrounding areas with maritime pine are one of the best locations in the Alentejo to listen and try to see the impish Coal Tit (Periparus ater) and even the beautiful Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus).
