The traditional dovecots have singular forms with diverse types, as to their form, materials, composition and architectural elements. They are vestiges of a time when everything that the environment was used. Once built, the pigeonries became a source of meat and of manure (known here as pombinho meaning small pigeon) used to improve soil fertility without demanding maintenance. The pigeons are also important to maintain several raptor birds of the region.
Palombar Association organizes voluntary labour camps to rebuild traditional dovecots, not only to rehabilitate these structures, but also to transmit traditional construction techniques.
