The convent, a national monument, belonging to Order of St. Francis, was founded after 1448. It underwent alterations in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It has a single nave with a 17th century altar made of Estremoz marble. The main chapel contains remnants of 17th century tiles, while the chapel screen is a wonderful example of 16th century ironwork. The cross in the churchyard dates back to the 15th century and is in marble on granite steps. Today the convent is a residential care home for elderly, run by Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Marvão. On September 8th is the feast of N. Sra. da Estrela, municipal holiday in Marvão.
Estrela cross from the first decades of the 16th century is in the churchyard and is also classified as a National Monument. This is one of the rare examples of Manueline art in Marvão and a show of devotion to Maria in Portugal. Indeed, facing the churchyard, it has the figure of Christ crucified, while in the one oriented to the convent, is Maria bolstering the body, lifeless, of her son.
