Portagem tower

Portagem customs medieval tower is about 7 km from Marvão and is prior to 1416, when the passage of Sever river was made using stones or the weir close to it. In this quadrangular tower were taxed the products coming from Spain (so the name Portagem toll). There many Jews, fleeing religious persecution in Spain, had to pay the entrance fee. To have a faint idea of this exodus, that later also happened in Portugal, in September 1492, a camp near Castelo de Vide, guarded by Portuguese troops to prevent incursions of their Castilian counterparts, housed 5,000 people.
Portagem bridge and tower and the surrounding area are classified as Conjunto de Interesse Público (Public Interest Set).
