Santa Maria de Aguiar Church and Convent
Share Image
Santa Maria de Aguiar Monastery was built in the 12th century, by order of the 1st Portuguese king Afonso Henriques, who donated it to the Cister Order. It is near the Aguiar River, a Douro River affluent, and it is a beautiful example of primitive Gothic architecture, in the simplicity of the plastic lines that characterized the sobriety of the buildings.
In addition to the beautiful church of sober architecture, except for the Baroque altarpiece from 1636, with St. Benedict and St. Bernard images, are still preserved the monks' wing with the sacristy and the Chapter room, a wall of the dinning hall and the inn building with a loggia with Tuscan columns and the Autonomous Congregation (Cister Order) coat of arms and the date 1704.
Loggia - arcade supported by piers or columns, open on one side at least; either part of a building (as a porch) or a separate structure.
