Póvoa e Meadas Dam (birdwatching)

In northern Alentejo, about 10 km NW of Castelo de Vide and 25 km north of Portalegre, this is the 1st and the largest hydroelectric in Portugal built in 1927, taking advantage of Nisa river waters (the largest watercourse of Castelo de Vide municipality).
On the water, there are granitic outcrops embellishing the reservoir. This is a good place to observe whether waterfowl and land birds in the surroundings of the dam, specially on oak groves and agricultural areas.
The best period for birdwatching here is March-June.
Waterfowl: Great Crested Grebe; Great Cormorant; Mallard; Grey Heron; Little Egret; Little Ringed Plover; Common Snipe; Green Sandpiper; Common Sandpiper; and Common Kingfisher.
