• The Gimonde bridge (ponte velha - old bridge) has a Roman origin and was built on the Malara River. It was part of the Roman Via XVII linking Bracara Augusta (now Braga in Portugal) to Asturica Augusta (Astorga in Spain), passing through Aquae Flaviae (Chaves in Portugal). It would also serve as a gateway to the inhabitants of Castro de Gimonde. In the medieval period underwent a deep remodelling work, being today a bridge of medieval technique.

It has a deck with 6 arches and cutwaters (upstream and downstream). Its superstructure and guards are built in shale stone, laying its foundations, superficially, on a shale rocky mass.

Cutwater - the angular edge of the pier of a bridge.
