• Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, around sixty dolmens were identified in the Soajo mountains, on the left bank of the river Vez. Many of them were almost ruins, due to the interest aroused by their "treasures". A century later, most of the material remains of these dolmens had disappeared due to successive acts of destruction and reusing of their sidestones, leaving only the tumulus, with the corresponding central depression where the primitive burial chamber was located, sometimes with one or two sidestones.

The most remarkable and best-known monument of this necropolis is Anta Grande do Mezio ("Dolmen of Mezio") precisely because, unlike most other remains, is relatively well preserved. There are some remains of the tumulus and the dolmen still holds the capstone and the passage, facing east.

The monument is easily accessed since it is located next to the road in front of the Mezio Gateway of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
