Cava da Velha bridge

The bridge of Cava da Velha, built over river Castro Laboreiro, stands out for its originality and landscape framing. Like the bridges of Assureira and Dorna, very close to this one, also the bridge of Cava da Velha had its origins in a Roman construction and is part of a Roman road that connected Portela do Homem to Castro Laboreiro.
Though of Roman origin, the bridge of Cava da Velha has now a medieval architecture and some originality since it was subject to various interventions in the High Middle Ages. The bridge has two round arches, of unequal width between them, the larger one measuring 10,60m and the smaller only 1,70m. The lower parts of the structure and the shape of the curve are made with worked ashlars and cushioned voussoirs – typical of the Roman Era - and the bridge deck, with uneven flagstones and imperfect stone guards, reveals the medieval reform.
