Viewpoint on Sintra mountain

The inclusion of Sintra in the UNESCO World Heritage List (1996) in the category of ‘cultural landscape’ did no more than materialize ideas that the Romantics had outlined in the nineteenth century. The mountain, a place full of misty colours in the winter and mildly sunny in the summer, was also a place of exhuberant vegetation, with strange rocky outcrops and ancient cults - such as the auld Moon Hill -, extravagant architecture as the palace of Pena or the Regaleira villa, the exoticism of Monserrate or the peculiar Capuchos convent, and stories with Moors in the castle… Other stories happened under the monumental chimneys of the Village Palace and on fine farms and manicured gardens, in a peculiar landscape combination. The Natural Park is much more than just the 'Cultural Landscape of Sintra' but is undoubtedly marked by it, and this is well proven by the park’s logo with the monumental chimneys of the Village Palace.
