Monastery of Santa Maria das Júnias
Share Image
The Monastery of Santa Maria was founded in the 12th century, becoming part of the Order of Cister. It is a monument with a remarkable landscape, implanted as it is in a small valley where the stream of Campesinho flows.
The monastery consists of the church, the Romanesque cloister, of which remain only three round arches, and the monastic house, in ruins, which has also undergone several transformations. Along the river there is still a mill, dated from late Middle Ages.
A few of the many points of interest of the monastery are the round arch of the church’s western door, with two archivolts (the outer one decorated with the theme of the spearheads and enhanced by a frame), the sculptures at the front of the church and two anthropomorphic sarcophagi in granite, one of them abandoned in the cloister and the other reused in the kitchen area.
Not far from the monastery, following the Pitões das Júnias route, one can enjoy the cascade of Pitões and the oak forest of Beredo.
