• The Chapel of S. Barão is an ancient place of pilgrimage, at the hilltop of the hills of the same name, overlooking the village of Corte da Velha.

A legend says S. Barão lived in a cave near the site where the chapel is and every Saturday, we went to beg at Mértola (his birthplace). Wolves scratched the cave with the claws, but, miraculously, never hurt the saint and, according to legend, are still there the scratches in the stone.

From the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, it has only one nave, chancel, sacristy and the former home of the scale, where were paid and weighed the promises. It also had two dependencies, to support the pilgrims and the festivities. It has a mixed system of coverage, barrel vault in the nave and chancel and the rest reed, and fresh at the arch and in the chancel.
