Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda
Share Image
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peneda is in Peneda mountain, halfway between Soajo and Castro Laboreiro (parish of Gavieira - Arcos de Valdevez).
It stands on the right bank of the Peneda river, occupying a hollow under a granite outcrop known as Penedo da Meadinha, which gives it a unique landscape framing.
It was built in honor of Our Lady of the Snows, unambiguous reference to the harsh local climate, and whose image, according to tradition, was found in a cave in ancient times. Every year, in the beginning of September, there is a procession in Her honour.
The sanctuary, inspired by the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte Braga, consists of a large temple, with two bell towers, sober and robust lines, and the front hollowed by large several large windows. The building has nineteenth century style with a Baroque influence, and opens onto an atrium giving access to a staircase in loops, with a balustrade ornamented by statues and elegant pinnacles.
Further below, we find a bigger yard, surrounded by the ancient buildings used to receive the pilgrims, the so-called "barracks", today transformed into a mountain hotel.
This yard extends itself to a small open portico that leads to a series of flights of stairs and landings where you can find the twenty chapels of the Stations of the Cross. The set is completed by a majestic Baroque portico, surmounted by the Royal Arms, and including, on the wall facing the sanctuary, a niche with the image of Our Lady of the Incarnation.
