• The reed bed of Apúlia is a place of great abundance (dominance) of reed (Phragmites australis) and other species such as the bulrush (Typha spp.) and the giant cane (Arundo donax). These hydrophilic (thet love water) species are surrounded by alluvial forests, such as willow ones, making it a place with unique features along the Portuguese north coast.

     

    These communities are an important habitat for many species, especially waterfowl. Migratory passerine species use these little ponds to rest and eat, thus ensuring conditions to continue its journey to their final destination.
