Monte da Balança (Scale Estate), so named because here it was weighed the ore from Balança mines, it is a good place to observe steppe birds. This group of birds, which includes the Great Bustard, the Little Bustard and the Black-bellied Sandgrouse, are birds that depend on the extensive system of dryland a great extent, since they require vast visual horizons. In this group are also included several species of larks and the European Roller.

Access to Mértola, from:
- Beja: IP2, IC27;
- Vila Real de Santo António: IC27;
- Castro Verde: EN123, IC27; or
- Lisboa – IP8
Access to Beja, from:
- Espanha: N260; or
- Lisboa: IP8.
From Mértola take N122 (direction Beja) and then N123 just to the cross to Corte Pequena. Drive to Corte Pequena and park. Then, on foot, do the reverse path of PR6 between the steppe and "montado”.
