• Rato Fort, Santo António Fortress or Ilha das Lebres Fort was built during the reign of King Sebastião to protect the mouth of the Gilão river and the entrance to the port of Tavira. Later, around 1670, it was built the São João Fort, a new fortress to defend Tavira entrance. After that  the Rato Fort had a secondary role in defensive strategy, ceasing to be garnished from 1840 and lying currently vacant. Since the 80's, restoration works were carried out, namely of the main door and wall sections, as well as cleaning and signaling the internal space of the fortress.
