Medieval necropolis of Barreiras
Share Image
The medieval cemetery of Barreiras is one of the most important among the European Middle Ages cemeteries. Excavated since 1989, it has unveiled a series of graves made of loose stones, with a cover. By the size of the graves and the analysis of bone remains, one can identify the age, gender and health status of the people buried there.
From the 12th century to the entry of the Black Death in Portugal (14th century), about two hundred skeletons were exhumed.
