• The construction of the fortress, that now includes the lighthouse of Esposende, began in 1699 and ended in 1704, during the reign of King Pedro II. This small size bastion – the court measuring 27 x 15 meters – with a star shaped layout and five watchtowers, had an artillery battery (facing the sea) included in a defensive curtain. The defense of the harbor was thus assured until the end of the last century, refraining over time the attacks of the pirates that cyclically ravaged the Portuguese coast.

Subject to the mishaps that affect this type of fortress – semi-abandoned and restored in moments of greater danger -, occasionally submerged by the advancing sands, the fort will have been partially dismantled at the time of the setting-up of the necessary infrastructures to support the lighthouse.
