Chapel of Nossa senhora das Neves
Share Image
Built in the early seventeenth century, the chapel stands on a hill overlooking Mértola providing extensive views over the village and Oeiras small river. The building of quadrangular plant and though stripped of artistic elements in its interior, has quite prominent in this its architectural type and has an interesting detail in the execution of their coverage. The chapel, with simple portal in stone, was built on the site where a tower from the Islamic period was. It is the focus of the annual procession of Nossa Senhora das Neves (Our Lady of the Snows) and place of prayer when the lack of water is felt over long periods. It is closed.
