Arrimal Small lagoon
Share Image
The small and large (this approximately 200 m NW) lagoons are small depressions whose bottoms are sealed with clay and other sediments and so are natural ways to store rainwater. Used traditionally by Arrimal, Arrabal, Mendiga and Alqueidão inhabitants for irrigation, domestic uses and as water sources for cattle, the lagoons are true oases in this rock realm.
In summertime, you can see a green mantle of Common Duckweed (Lemna minor), covering the lagoon. On the banks, due to the size and cigar aspect of its inflorescences Broadleaf Cattail (Typha latifolia) is evident among several wetlands plants. Perez's Frog (Rana perezi), Common Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamander), Viperine Snake (Natrix maura), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) and Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) are the most common species in the lagoons, being quite important to amphibians, primarily for their larval development, because here is water all year round.
Around the lagoons and along Arrimal main street the wells built in limestone are beautiful architectural examples, witnesses of old times when groundwater was nearer the surface than today.
Small Lagoon: 39° 29' 30" N, 08° 52' 37" W
Large Lagoon: 39° 29' 58" N, 08° 52' 20" W
