Memorial statue of Henry the Navigator "Infante de Sagres", made in bronze, on a pedestal in stone, by Augusto Cid.
Henry, 5th son of King João I and Filipa of Lancaster, was one of the infants of the illustrious generation (name given by the poet Luís Vaz de Camões, in "the Lusíadas", to the sons of King João I). Was Grand Master of the Order of Christ, Lord of Lagos and Sagres, that´s why he has a statue in both locations. He took part in the conquest of Ceuta (1415) where he was knighted. He was responsible for the Portuguese and European maritime expansion of the fifteenth century. In 1427, navigators at his service discover and initiate the exploration of Madeira and Azores archipelagos. In 1434, Gil Eanes passed the Bojador cape, and so torn apart myths and fears, opening the navigation along the West African coast.
Henry was born in OPorto on March 4, 1394, and died in Sagres, November 13, 1460, shortly after arriving the news of the discovery of new islands in front of Cape Verde. His body lies in the Founder's Chapel in the Monastery of Batalha. He never married and died without leaving any children. Its motto "Talant Bien faire" is now the motto of the Portuguese Navy.

Tips
-
Take a few minutes and go to the tourist office near the statue. In the same square try to know what time is it in the large sun clock and, at the roundabout, next to the old post of Fiscal Guard, note an anchor of the French warship "L'Océan", sunk in 1759 off Salema beach. Look at the sea, from the belvedere next to the garden.
