• Budens wetland is an important wetland in Algarve, with about 134 ha, that was a crice field area. This part of the wetland is the area flooded northeast at Boca do Rio beach. It has Common Reed (Phragmites australis) and Cattails (Typha spp). In the south part of the dirt road bordering this wetland, are woods and forest patches with Strawberry Trees (Arbutus unedo), Cork Oaks (Quercus suber) and pines (Pinus spp.). So you can see here wetlands birds and more terrestrial ones.

Listen to the elusive Western Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) and see the Common Coot (Fulica atra) and the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus). The Savi's Warbler (Locustella luscinioides), uncommon in the Algarve and whose sound reminds a cicada (Locust) can also be heard here and, with luck, sighted. Species such as Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Zitting Cisticola (Juncidis cisticola), Cetti's Warbler (Cettia cetti), Eurasian Reed-warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and the Great Reed-warbler (A. arundinaceus) can be seen here. In winter, Eurasian Penduline-tit (Remiz pendulinus) appears, while in summer the Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) fills the sky with its colors.

  • The best time to visit this wetland, in terms of avifauna, are spring and winter, but the beginning of autumn is also interesting because it is possible to watch migratory birds.
