• Geira is the name by which is known an important Roman military road, built presumably in the 1st century A.C., the Route (Via) nº 18 of the Antonino Itinerary. It was along this road that legions of soldiers and emperors have travelled from Bracara Augusta (now Braga, in Portugal) to Asturica Augusta (Astorga, in Spain), in a course of 215 miles (1 mile - 1000 steps). Later on, the populations that have lived in the areas crossed by the road also began to use it, maintaining and improving it with new sidewalks and bridges.

Part of this route has disappeared, but there are still some well-preserved sections, such as the one that crosses Peneda-Gerês National Park namely between Campo do Gerês and the border of Portela do Homem (between the miles XXVII and XXXIV). Along this route are visible archaeological remains, such as milestones (mostly with epigraphs), ruins of bridges, mutationes (changing stations) and mansiones (places of rest, sadly covered by the waters of Vilarinho das Furnas' dam almost all year round).
