Channels Watermill (Moinho dos Canais)
Share Image
In an area where cereal was until recently the basis of the farm production, the mills are a testimony of those times when human populations did not yet have the mechanical means to grind the cereal. The Channels Mill has its name due to an art of artisanal fishing practiced here, the “caneiro” (small channel to capture lampreys). It consisted of a barrier-type trap made from plant materials, such as reeds, placed next to the mills water dams. When the river flow was smaller and could not reach the reservoir, the only possible passage for the fish was through the channels that carried water to the water wheel, but was blocked by the “caneiro”.
