São Mamede de Janas Chapel
Share Image
In the vicinity of the chapel there are prehistoric vestiges, reason why we know the occupation of this region is quite ancient. Although it is common to associate this chapel with an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Diana, it seems that this is true. It is known, however, that in its origin will be other constructions, from the 9th and 12th centuries. In fact, it will be around this time that was instituted in the Iberian Peninsula the cult of St. Mamede, a saint who was thrown to the beasts in the circus, but instead of attacking the animals, they prostrated themselves at his feet (says the legend). It is therefore a saint associated with areas of animal husbandry and grazing, since it is a protector of livestock.
In the fifteenth century, there was already here a chapel, but the current configuration derives from a building of the centuries XVI-XVII. Some attribute to Francisco de Holanda the scholar character of its core structure, circular and formed by Italian type columns with plain shaft and chapiters that support a tambour that rises to the ceiling. It has a porch, facing south, surrounding about half of the temple just to the chapel, oriented to the east, the other half is supported by three powerful buttresses, which have recently been added, and a stone ring surrounding the structure, ensuring the support.
In August 15 to 17, takes place the feast in honor of Saint Mamede, where the catle owners lead the livestock in three rituals laps, counterclockwise, around the chapel, offering cereals, olive oil , waxes or other offerings to the saint; in turn, receive colored ribbons to put around the animal neck or halter.
