Daniel Gildemeester, the Dutch consul in Portugal, ordered the construction of a mannor here in the eighteenth century that was sold to the 5th Marquis of Marialva, equerry of the Kingdom, which had made several improvements, including a new building, added to the original work, and united the two by an arch, the ex-libris of the Palace, whit a bronze medallion with the effigies of King João VI and his wife D. Carlota Joaquina. In the main building runs a famous luxury hotel and, although private property, the outside and part of the gardens can be visited, just as the belvedere.
The Seteais Palace, including all buildings and fenced yard, gardens, terraces and farm, is classified as ‘Imóvel de Interesse Público’.
The word ‘Seteais’ comes from the Portuguese word for rye (‘centeio’), because, in the past, these were rye fields.

- N9 (by A5 / Cascais).
Take N249 and N375 for S. Pedro de Penaferrim, take then N375 to Sintra’s historic center (Pr. da República, near Sintra‘s National Palace). Seteais is 1 km away from the center, so, continue straight on to N375 / R. Consiglieri Pedroso and then R. Barbosa do Bocage, until you see the Palace on your left.
From Colares take N375. The Palace is at your right.
