Important defense of the Sado estuary and Setúbal. Here has been a monument to Neptune. In the fourteenth century, a tower was built for coastal protection. Over the centuries was expanded and took part in several episodes of defense of nationality and the coast. It has a chapel with tiles, assigned to the Great Schools Lisbon (nineteenth century), and a golden altarpiece. In the twentieth century was a prison and a holiday in for the royal family. Queen Amélia offered this structure to be a sanatorium (the 1st in Portugal). Now is the Orthopedic Hospital of Santiago do Outão.
