São Mamede Mountain Route
Share Image
This circular route starts in Portalegre and allows you to know the central area of Serra de São Mamede Nature Park with some of the most interesting points of interest: landscape; geomorphological; floristic; architectural; and historical. It crosses the counties of Portalegre, Castelo de Vide and Marvão, with some zones with altitudes above 800 m, marked by quartzite ridges and impressive reliefs. Passing through some viewpoints and picnic areas, plan your travel day (avoid Monday), so you can visit the castles of Marvão and Castelo de Vide (plus the synagogue and other museums), the Roman ruins of Ammaia city, the bridge, tower and Cova watermill in Portagem. Enjoy the landscape from the summit of S. Mamede Mountain with 1027 m, and try to see the heights of Estrela Mountain and part of the Spanish Extremadura. On summer days, rest in Portagem leisure center and in its river beach on Sever River while you see small birds eating insects. In Portalegre, on Liberdade Av., see the great Plane Tree and between Escusa and Portagem, on N 246-1, enjoy the classified ashes on the roadside.
