Carreiro da Senhora
Share Image
Preliminary note: the atmospheric conditions especially on the top of these hills can change rapidly, particularly wind, rain, temperature drop and decreased visibility due to cloud cover, so it is recommended the use of proper clothing, mapping and GPS. Given Montejunto is a limestone area do not leave the paths because there are natural cavities in which you can fall. The route is not marked and is part on a municipal road paved, so it requires particular care with vehicles. Surface: dirt road and trails with loose rock. Over about 22 km we follow by hills and valleys bordering the south side of Montejunto enjoying new perspectives of known landscapes where the autumnal colors of the vineyards contrast with the green returning after the first rains. By narrow and steep tracks we reach the top of the mountain, the setting sun spreads over the Atlantic, contrasting with the black silhouette of Sintra hills and the calm of Mar da Palha (an area on the Tagus river). It is time to return, down Carreiro da Senhora, leaning on a landscape that extends on the wavy reliefs of Extremadura, which, from that point, become almost flat. This route allows a visit to the National Forest of Quinta da Serra and to the Royal Ice Factory Interpretation Centre.
