A landmark of ancient times, the old Alferes water mill is the arrival point for a route along one of the most important affluents of the river Guadiana, the Vascão stream, whose notoriety comes from its high natural value. It is an amazing route for the beauty, serenity and freshness of the surrounding landscape. ATTENTION: the route includes the crossing of the dam do Alferes watermill which may not be possible when the river flow is great. In this case, turn back by same way.

From Mértola, follow road N122 towards Algarve. Drive through Álamo village and turn right to Via Glória. Pass Moinhos de Vento place and follow up to São Bartolomeu de Via Glória. At the junction, by the entrance to Via Glória, take the direction of Giões, and after about 2 km, park right before de bridge over the Vascão stream. The beginning of the route is on the left.
