Located off the coast of Peniche, the Berlenga Grande Island, was occupied in the early sixteenth century by a community of jerónimos brothers who built the Misericórdia da Berlenga Monastery which provided assistance to the shipwrecked. However, the corsairs attacks forced the brothers to leave the archipelago and, in the mid-seventeenth century, was ordered the construction of a fortress on the island: the fort of St. John the Baptist. In 1938, the fort was classified as a National Monument, and in the mid-twentieth century was restored, and turned into an inn.
