The Convent of Saint Francis in Mértola, in its origin, is a religious building, where the use of local materials offers a rustic environment of great beauty. The chapel was transformed into a space of exhibition of artistic activity that is promoted here, complemented by the main garden where the original irrigation system of Islamic root was restored, and where were some areas were planted a wide variety of species, especially herbs. Near the mouth of Oeiras river, where it meets the Guadiana river, the 40 ha surrounding the convent are dedicated to the practice of organic farming. Has a set of observatories for birds, especially the colony of Lesser Kestrel towers, with 75 nesting pairs.
