• CIAB - Interpretative Center of Atouguia da Baleia

  • The CIAB - Interpretative Center of Atouguia da Baleia aims at the study, valuation and dissemination of the historical and cultural heritage of the Peniche municipality, providing an integrated view of the Historical Region of Atouguia da Baleia, from geology and palaeontology to archaeology and history, without forgetting human geography and anthropology. Highlight for the works in the altarpiece of the main altar of the church of S. José, as well as the Participatory Inventory of Cultural Heritage project.

The church of S. José (St. Joseph) hosts various activities, such as exhibitions, concerts, conferences, plays, poetry sessions and, of course, religious celebrations (in honour of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Grace).

Note: next to São Domingos rivermouth and until the beginning of the 15th century, Peniche was an island and Atouguia was the most important urban settlement and port of this region. Atouguia has an uncertain origin, but may come from a bull (touro in Portuguese). Baleia means whale.
