It is assumed that the first fortified enclosure of Castro Marim should have consisted in a castro from the Neolithic period, lifted on the crown of the hill. Due to the topographic configuration and strategic location of Castro Marim, this place was successively occupied over time by various and distinct populations, among which are the Carthaginians, Vandals and Moors, the latter until the Christian conquest of the town in 1242 . The village grew up within the walls of the old castle until the fourteenth century, when King D. Dinis strengthen the fortification, expanding it with the construction of the 'Muralha de Fora' (oputside wall). Within this new walled enclosure, lie the ruins of the Church of Santiago, primitive matrix of the village, built in the fourteenth century, as well as the churches of Santa Maria and the ancient Church of 'Misericórdia' that by the sixteenth century, when the village began to grow outside the walls, represented the temporal power among the population.
