Classified as “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Heritage of Public Interest), in 1997 Santa Cruz watermill was built at the end of the 15th century and worked until the middle of the 20th century being now a historical and tourist landmark of this area. Originally called Santa Cruz de Ribamar watermill (due to the maritime cliff – Ribamar - where it was built and the name given to this area) it used the water of a deviated creek.

 

The building has now several facilities, including an Interpretation Center telling the watermill story, the grinding of cereals and the bread manufacture. Azenha de Santa Cruz is a cultural project promoting the traditions and the dissemination of memory and popular culture, also hosting the services of the Tourist Office and the Santa Cruz Beach Library.

  • Access to Santa Cruz coming from:

    - Torres Vedras (± 17 km) - N9 and N247.

    - Lisbon - A8 take Leiria direction until the exit 7 - Torres Vedras Sul. Follow to N8, N9 and N247 until Santa Cruz. Alternatively take N8 through Venda do Pinheiro and Turcifal to Torres Vedras and follow to N9 and N247.

    - Porto – A1 exit in the direction of Aveiro, converge with A25, continue on A17 towards Leiria. Take A8 just to exit 8 - Torres Vedras Norte, follow to N8, N9 and N247 until Santa Cruz. Alternatively you can take N1 through Leiria just to Rio Maior. There take IC2 to Alcoentre and N115 to Torres Vedras, follow to N8, N9 and N247 until Santa Cruz.

     

    In Santa Cruz head towards the coast along Av. José Guimarães Pinheiro, R. José Veríssimo and R. da Azenha.

    Buses

    Rede Nacional de Expressos to Torres Vedras.

    Barraqueiro Oeste from Lisbon - Campo Grande (near the metro station), direct to Torres Vedras. There take the bus to Santa Cruz.

     

    Train - Linha do Oeste to Torres Vedras.
