• Joaquim Martins Correia (1910-1999), modernist artist, "color sculptor" and painter, was born in Golegã donating to this museum, about 600 pieces made by him, including sculptures, tiles, drawings, prints and medals. In addition to the works of this master, this museum also has a space with works by other artists, his friends and students.

Orphan at an early age (parents died with the so call "pneumonic"), soon entered Casa Pia in Lisbon, continuing his studies in Fine Arts where he made the drawing course, thanks to a scholarship. The taste for drawing has turned easy his approach to sculpture. He worked as a teacher and artist, developing his great passion: the work in bronze. However, proving to be eclectic, his works includes serigraphy, stone, clay (baked and glazed), as well as paintings. Recurring themes are, however, horses, bulls, land and women, showing the deep connection of the artist to his Ribatejo and Portuguese origins.

Although during his life he did not like to dispose of their works he has sculptures all over Portugal, from Golegã, Figueira da Foz, Lisbon (case of Garcia de Orta statue at the Institute of Tropical Medicine or the statue "Pomona" in Picoas metro station), Castelo Branco, Leiria, Viseu, Oporto, Vila Franca de Xira ... Also abroad in Goa (India), Newfoundland (Canada), Osaka (Japan)...

He has received the Order of Santiago and Officer of the Order of Public Instruction, and also many other awards, among others, from the National Society of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Fine Arts, of which he was an honorary Member.

Never pull out a tree to put a sculpture there - principle of master Martins Correia in Escultura Pública. Poética do Escultor Martins Correia by António José Lopes Coelho, p. 7.
