Carlos Reis Municipal Museum has four long-term exhibitions, on Local History, Archaeology, Sacred Art and Painting, having a rather heterogeneous collection according to the pieces heterogeneity, this makes it rich in terms of heritage and an exception in all local museums in the region.
Dedicated to Carlos Reis, born in Torres Novas, the painting nuclei presents about 30 pieces, including landscapes and portraits, which show a predilection for aspects of daily and country life from that "painter of light". In the remaining nuclei most items come from donations or deposits.
Carlos António Rodrigues dos Reis (1863-1940) was one of the great Portuguese painters, having influenced generations of artists. Student of Silva Porto (another well-known Portuguese painter), succeeded him as a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Defender of naturalism, outdoor painting lover, was primarily a landscape artist, depicting scenes of a rural and bucolic Portugal. It was also a portraitist, including royalty (it was a personal friend of king Carlos). Being one of the founders of the Portuguese National Fine Arts Society (SNBA), he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Santiago de Espada, having received also the Medal of Honor of SNBA.
