The painter José Cercas was born in Aljezur in 1914.
He died in 1992 and donated his house and all his private art collection to the Council.
In Lisbon, he started studying at the Fine Arts School and gets familiar with many other painters. After his sudies, he starts his artistic career, essentially dedicated to flowers, landscapes and portraits.
At the coffee table and along social gatherings, he was keen in satirical drawings, of which he left a wide collection. In such contexts he met and was a frequent part of gatherings with very relevant figures of Portuguese cultural life at the time, frequently being seen in hotspots like Café Lisboa, Nicola, Gelo, Brasileira and Martinho da Arcada.
Inside the musem we can find some of his paintings and those of others artists, sacred art, crockery and pottery, sculptures and furniture that belonged to José Cercas.

Museum access from Lisbon, by car:
Take the A2 motorway. Take the exit at IC1 and then take N263. In Odemira, take the N120 that goes across Aljezur and take the first turn on the right (after passing through the Mercado Municipal). Continue through until you reach Largo 5 de Outubro and take the first turn on the left (S. João de Deus street). Turn again left to Rua do Gabão > Rua do Castelo where is the Museum House at the right side.
